About This Test
Urine amylase helps assess pancreatic health by checking how much of the digestive enzyme amylase is being filtered into your urine. Levels often stay elevated longer in urine than in blood, which can be helpful when symptoms persist but blood tests are already falling. Doctors usually interpret this together with serum amylase/lipase and abdominal imaging. This test is commonly included in targeted evaluations of abdominal pain or suspected pancreatitis.
Patient Preparation
No fasting needed. Collect a clean-catch midstream urine in a sterile container; avoid contamination with stool or toilet water.

Why is it done
Evaluation of sudden upper abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, or suspected acute pancreatitis; follow-up when blood amylase/lipase have normalized but symptoms continue; differentiating macroamylasemia from pancreatic disease; monitoring resolution of a pancreatic flare alongside clinical symptoms and imaging.
