About This Test
Uric acid is the end-product of purine breakdown. When levels are high, crystals can form in joints (gout) or the urinary tract (kidney stones). Levels also track with metabolic health and may rise with obesity, high-purine diets, alcohol, or some medicines. Results are interpreted with kidney tests and symptoms to guide prevention and treatment. This test is commonly included in routine check-ups to screen for potential problems early.

Patient Preparation
No fasting needed. If possible, avoid alcohol and very high-purine foods (e.g., organ meats, certain seafood) for 24 hours before the test unless instructed otherwise.

Why is it done
Evaluation of joint pain, swelling, or suspected gout; work-up of kidney stones or urinary crystals; monitoring uric-acid-lowering therapy (e.g., allopurinol, febuxostat) and dietary changes; assessment of metabolic syndrome or diuretic use that can raise uric acid.
