About This Test
The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) checks how your body handles a measured sugar load. After a fasting sample, you drink a glucose solution and your blood sugar is checked at set times to see how quickly it returns toward normal. It helps detect hidden problems with sugar control even when fasting sugar looks fine. This test is commonly included in routine health check-ups to screen for potential problems early. It is also widely used in pregnancy to screen for gestational diabetes.
Patient Preparation
10 hrs fasting, water only. No water and food intake for the whole precedure.
Best Time to Test

Fasting glucose; Glucose 1 hour; Glucose 2 hours
Why is it done
Screening and diagnosis of diabetes or prediabetes; evaluation of symptoms like excessive thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, or fatigue; routine screening for gestational diabetes (typically at 24–28 weeks, or earlier if high-risk); clarifying borderline results from fasting glucose or HbA1c; helping clinicians tailor lifestyle changes or medications.
