About This Test
The Oral Glucose Challenge Test (OGCT) is a simple, non-fasting screen for gestational diabetes. You drink a measured glucose drink, and a single blood sample is taken 1 hour later to see how your body metabolizes sugar. It can catch pregnancy-related sugar problems even when routine sugars look normal. This test is commonly included in routine prenatal check-ups to screen for potential problems early.
Patient Preparation
No fasting needed
Best Time to Test
Morning preferred, but can also be done anytime
Tests Included
OGCT
Why is it done
Routine screening for gestational diabetes (often at 24–28 weeks, or earlier if high-risk); evaluation when there’s excessive thirst, frequent urination, or prior high sugars in pregnancy; guides whether a confirmatory OGTT is needed; helps clinicians tailor diet and pregnancy care.
