About This Test
CA 19-9 is a carbohydrate antigen that can rise in cancers of the pancreas and bile ducts. Levels may also increase with non-cancer problems like jaundice, gallstones, or pancreatitis, so results are always read with imaging and clinical findings. This test is commonly used to follow known disease rather than to screen healthy people.

Why is it done
Monitoring treatment response or recurrence in pancreatic or biliary cancers; aiding evaluation of persistent jaundice, unexplained weight loss, or abdominal pain when imaging is suspicious; helping with prognosis when markedly elevated; not suitable as a stand-alone screening test.
