About This Test
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein made in high amounts by the fetus and, in adults, can rise with certain liver conditions and tumors. Doctors use AFP mainly as a tumor marker for liver cancer and some germ-cell tumors, and to monitor treatment. AFP alone cannot diagnose cancer, but changes over time are informative.
