About This Test
Potassium is a key electrolyte that keeps nerves firing, muscles contracting, and the heart’s rhythm steady. Levels can fall with vomiting/diarrhea, poor intake, or some diuretics, and can rise with kidney problems or certain medicines (e.g., ACE inhibitors). Results are interpreted with sodium and CO₂ to understand overall chemistry balance. This test is commonly included in routine chemistry panels to detect problems early.
Patient Preparation
No fasting needed. If possible, avoid taking potassium supplements right before the draw unless instructed.
