About This Test
Calcium is a key mineral for strong bones and teeth, proper nerve signals, and normal heart and muscle function. Most calcium is stored in bone, but the blood level must stay within a narrow range controlled by parathyroid hormone and vitamin D. Abnormal results can point to problems in the parathyroid glands, kidneys, bone health, or vitamin D balance. This test is commonly included in routine check-ups to screen for potential problems early.
