About This Test
Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is an enzyme found in many tissues—blood cells, liver, muscle, lungs, and others. When cells are damaged or break down, LDH can rise, so it works as a broad “tissue stress” signal. Doctors read LDH alongside more specific tests (e.g., CBC for hemolysis, ALT/AST for liver, CK for muscle) to locate source of potential problem. This test is commonly included in targeted check-ups to support early detection and better monitoring.

Why is it done
Evaluation of unexplained fatigue, pallor, or jaundice when hemolysis is suspected; supportive marker in liver, lung, or muscle conditions; monitoring certain cancers or infections where LDH tracks overall disease activity; follow-up of previously abnormal results to see if injury is improving.
