About This Test
CA-125 is a protein released from cells lining the ovaries and the inside of the abdomen (peritoneum). Levels can rise with ovarian cancer, but also with non-cancer causes like menstruation, endometriosis, pregnancy, or pelvic infections. Doctors mainly use it together with ultrasound or other tests rather than on its own. This test is commonly included in targeted check-ups to support early detection and monitoring when there’s a known risk or symptoms.

Why is it done
Monitoring treatment response and recurrence in known ovarian cancer; helping assess a pelvic mass, bloating, or persistent pelvic pain; supporting risk assessment in women with strong family history or suspicious imaging; not recommended as a stand-alone screening test for the general population.
